Beaver fur is primarily found within North America, the best beaver comes from Canada, Northern United States and Alaska. During the 19th century beaver hats were considered to be a status symbol for men and beaver coats a status symbol for women. Beaver fur has historically been used for coats and other large pieces of clothing but it is also quite popular on hats. The beaver is an aquatic animal; it has shiny guard hair and soft, thick under fur. Beaver fur is known to be extremely warm and water repellant.

Sheared Beaver means that the fur is evenly trimmed. This type of fur is exceptionally soft, almost velvet-like. Shearing removes the guard hair but the under-fur, which provides all the insulation, still remains therefore you can wear beaver in just about any weather condition and still stay warm. Sheared beaver fur is water repellent so it is no problem if it gets wet (though you should never allow it to get soaked). Shearing minimizes overall bulk which allows for a sleeker, more polished look.
