Great Gatsby Fur Fashion Inspiration

May 10th marks the highly anticipated release of the film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American classic The Great Gatsby.

The book/movie takes place in the 1920′s and fashion during that time was all about glitz and glamor. The 1920′s paved the way for many of the fur fashion trends seen today and the looks included everything from fur coats to collars to hats.

The fur fashion blog Fur Insider posted an article about 1920′s fur fashion and give readers a unqiue glimpse in to what women of that time enjoyed to wear.

The Debate On Fur

Mail Online posted a very interesting article regarding fur, they discuss the use of fur in designer garments and its growing popularity. The article features comments from the International Fur Trade Federation, British Fur Trade Association and Kopenhagen Fur.

Not so long ago, it was more acceptable to smoke next to a baby than it was to sport a coat made from fox, mink or chinchilla. Such was public disgust, those who did venture out in a pelt were likely to find themselves deluged with red paint.

But how times have changed. Once taboo, fur is now a regular sight on the catwalk, with labels such as Armani, Temperley and Vionnet using it in their collections.

At the Cheltenham Festival last week, race-goers turned up swathed in expensive mink and raccoon coats, while on the red carpet, A-listers such as Kate Moss and Rihanna are as happy to strike a pose in a fur as they are in lace. So what does that mean for the rest of us? Is fur now OK to wear?

Fur At The Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival

The Cheltenham horse racing festival took place this week and thanks to the cold snap in the U.K many women who attended the races turned to fur to stay warm and look fashionable. One of my favorite fur fashion websites wearefur.com posted several photos of the women who decided to sport fur coats and accessories at the festival and needless to say they looked absolutely fabulous!

One picture that caught my eye was of two women wearing colored fur hats (top left). Colored fur is a fun trend that immediately adds flair to any outfit you pair it with. Our purple fox fur headband is almost identical in color to the lady on the right hand side of the picture. As you can see it looks absolutely stunning paired with a black coat. Last week we featured Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton in our blog for wearing a classic fur collar, this week her sister Pippa followed suit with an elegant yet trendy brown fur hat. Pippa’s hat looked perfect with her yellow pea coat, it proved to be the perfect accessory!

We could not let the Cheltenham horse racing festival pass without paying homage to the beautiful ladies in their gorgeous fur, well done ladies, well done!

Kate Middleton Accessorizes With A Fur Collar

Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton attended the wedding of professional polo player Mark Tomlinson and Laura Bechtolsheimer this week with Prince William and Harry.

William was an usher at the wedding so his younger brother Harry was Kate’s escort for the day.

Kate, who is expecting to give birth in July, wore a printed MaxMara Studio dress under an elegant cream colored coat with a Lock and Company Pillbox hat. Fashionable Fur For The New Year!

Kim Kardashian started off her new year in a luscious and extremely glam Lanvin fur coat. This coat first made its debut on the Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 runway and later found its way to one of our favorite reality T.V starlets. She paired the coat with a simple white GAP boyfriend shirt, tuxedo pants and black Christian Louboutin leather pumps. Kim allowed her fur coat to be the statement piece of this outfit and paired it with classic, neutral pieces making for an elegant and sophisticated look.

The fur trend is making a smooth transition from 2012 to 2013 and many celebrities have stepped out in the new year wearing fur. A trend that was extremely popular in 2012 has not lost its momentum in the new year.

Cossack Hats Are A Hit In Britain

According to The Guardian, Cossack hats are a huge hit in British fashion this season.

“With bitterly cold weather setting in across Britain, the Cossack hat is shaping up as winter 2012′s high street fashion hit. The style made glamorous by Julie Christie in Doctor Zhivago, and more recently by Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina, is doing swift trade across the UK.”

The article goes in to more detail about the Cossack hat trend, “Big films like Anna Karenina always have an effect on fashion, from the catwalk down,” said Susannah Frankel, fashion director of Grazia magazine. “I think there’s also a Russian influence across the board in fashion.”

This week at a Chanel catwalk show at Linlithgow Palace, near Edinburgh, front row guests including model Poppy Delevingne and stylist Caroline Sieber wore the style. It also seems particularly popular at London ice rinks.

Rebecca Lowthorpe, fashion features director at Elle magazine, said the Cossack hat is a winter glamor staple. “If you think of an image of a big Cossack hat, you think of Julie Christie in Doctor Zhivago, which is possibly the most glamorous image of winter imaginable. Who doesn’t want to look like that?” she said.”

Fashion Week Is Over But Fur Is Here To Stay

New York Fashion week ended a couple weeks ago and one thing that everyone is still buzzing about is the comeback of fur. Fashion bloggers and magazines can’t stop talking about the incorporation of fur on to this seasons runways. Celebrities are going crazy for this look, the always outspoken Joan Rivers was quoted saying that she loves fur because “It’s so glamorous and luxe!” Stars and fashionistas alike are embracing the fur trends this season and they just can’t get enough.

‘Hats on Parade’ event was a milliner’s delight

Looking for new ideas check out the “Hats on Parade” event showcasing many different hat styles through history. Make sure you keep warm this season with fashion fur hats.

Hats and gloves were the order of the day as the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum held its “Hats On Parade” Tea and Hat Fashion Show on Saturday, June 16.

The Tea ran in conjunction with the Museum’s new hat exhibit in the Jeanette Lyons Room, presented by the Costume Council.

Kaye Spilker, curator of costumes and textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, gave an informative lecture on hats through history.

“A hat is the most noticeable fashion item you can wear, as the onlooker’s attention is drawn to the face. The old saying goes, ‘If you want to get ahead and get noticed, then get a hat,’” Spilker said at the opening of her lecture.

Spilker covered the etiquette and formality of hats, different styles of hats throughout the ages, how the times, both political and economic, changed the style, shape and size of hats, and how feathers became fashionable almost to the point of wiping out certain species.
