Hooded Rabbit Fur Knit Jacket with Raccoon Fur Trim

Knit fur refers to the specific design of a garment. Pelts are hand cut in to a long strip and made in to a durable fur yarn. Once the fur yarn is created the traditional process of wool knitting is followed for the fur garment. Fur yarn is extremely strong and the woven design makes for a resilient piece. Knit fur is very lightweight and comfortable to wear; it also features fur on both side of the piece which is unique to this specific design. Knit fur has become extremely popular over the last several years and it can be found in anything from hats to jackets. Similar to how cow hides are used for leather, rabbits are ranch-raised in Europe for food purposes and the pelts are used for fur. Rabbit fur is light weight, warm, and softer than any man made material. Rabbit can come in many different forms; it can be left natural, plucked, sheared, dyed and processed in order to resemble other furs. Rabbit has a medium length guard hair and it comes in a wide array of colors, it is not as durable as some other types of furs but it is less expensive and a great value.

Raccoon is generally found within North America, its fur gets thicker and longer the farther north the animal lives. Traditionally, Native American tribes used raccoon fur for winter clothing while the tails served as decoration. During the 19th century raccoon fur was sometimes used as a form of payment. Shortly after the release of the film "Davy Crocket, King of the Wild Frontier" the popularity of coonskin caps greatly increased, today the Raccoon hat is more commonly known as the "Davy Crocket Hat". The Raccoons distinguishing tail alternates black with tan rings and its body guard hairs are long and silver with black tips. Their fur is very durable if taken care of properly and a number of Raccoon coats from the 1920's are still around today. Raccoon fur is often used today for fur trims such as collars and cuffs.
